Yesterday (Sept 14, 2015) the Daily Telegraph reported that NSW Liberal MPs are becoming increasingly worried over the Baird Government’s plan to amalgamate local councils.
These NSW Liberal MPs have a right to be worried.
Every state government in Australia which has forced amalgamations has lost the next election. History shows it is the biggest single issue which will lose an election – no matter how popular the government.
So if the Baird Government does try to force our local councils to merger it will lose the next NSW state election and many, many Liberal and coalition MPs will lose their seats.
So a message to all Liberal MPs, “Do not allow the Baird government and Local Government MP Paul Toole to force local council amalgamations. It is NOT progressive. It kills the voice of the local people – a valuable asset. It is NOT a way for good urban planning. It will NOT make local government fitter. And it is not popular because the people understand this.“
Also one thing the Baird Government is in danger of NOT understanding is the power of social media. There are many, many active groups on social media dedicated to saving their local council from mergers.
